What Is a Tax Extension and How to File It
The TRIG Team · · 4 min read
[Placeholder article text.] A tax extension gives you extra time to file your return, usually six months.
It does not extend the time to pay. Estimated tax is still due on the original deadline.
Businesses file Form 7004; individuals file Form 4868.
Filing an extension is common and doesn't raise red flags. Missing the deadline without one does.
